Eight days after the full moon in Shravan is Janmashtami or
the birthday of Lord Krishna. Krishna is believed to have been
born at midnight. People offer prayers in temples at night. In
some temples a small idol of baby krishna is put into a cradle
at midnight and rocked. In Mathura where Krishna was born,
Janmashtami is celebrated with a great deal of fervour and
feeling.
On the next day in Mumbai and in other parts of Maharashtra
you know how young boys climb on each others shoulders and
make human pyramids. This is to get to the pot (mathi) of
yoghurt, fruits and money which is tied at a high place.
Krishna also loved yoghurt and butter. Quite often, he climbed
up high to get the butter pot from the loft.
